June is upon us and it is time to elect new officers. Your units and districts will be choosing people to represent you and the organization. I would like to take a minute and talk about expectations. What are the expectations of the officers in the unit and district? Are the people who are deciding to run aware of what they need to do? Not the unwritten duties, but the tasks they need to accomplish. It is important for candidates to understand what taking that office is all about. On that same note, with changing times and people using smartphones and social media, what is the expectation of the officer to respond to a concern? Not your personal feeling but one that is realistic. Many years ago the officers did not have smartphones, email or text messaging. If they worked, they could answer the voicemail left for them, after work, and respond. It was not the expectation that they
would call home and listen to messages and call back right away. Yet, with the advancement in technology, it has become the culture to expect a response immediately.
While electing your officers and brushing up your standing rules, think about discussing what the time frame is to get a response.
This all seems pretty heavy of a topic, but just like any other position, the officers do need some boundaries. This will help reduce burnout in the organization.
I hope you all had successful Memorial Day ceremonies. It is time to prepare for the
Department Convention. We need as much attendance as possible. This year we will be electing a new National Executive Committeeperson. This role is the bridge between our Department and National. We hope to see you there!
Have a great June and summer.
Respectfully,
Jennifer McLeod
