Candidates who are running for Department Officer Positions
Dear Auxiliary Members,
This letter serves to announce my candidacy for the office of President of the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of
CT for the 2024-2025 year. My eligibility is under my father, Daniel Santovasi, who was a US Marine in World War II. My
credentials were previously explained in detail in my letter last year for Department Senior Vice President and I have
recapped them at the end of this letter because I wish to provide my growth in the organization since that time.
My personal emphasis, if elected, is to work as a team within the Legion Family and continue to move our organization
forward to achieve our goals and fulfil our mission. With our knowledgeable and goal-oriented members in Officer and
Chairmen roles and hard-working committee members this can be accomplished. I continue to seek the counsel of our
Past Department Presidents for their valuable insights and knowledge. That is our team.
Since starting my journey to become Department President I attended National’s DLNC Conference in May 2023; our
2023 Department Convention; the 2023 National Convention; our Program Information Conference; Stand Down;
National Mission Training; the Department Legion Commander’s testimonial; Christmas shops and most recently the
National President’s visit.
It began by attending the DLNC conference in Indianapolis in May of 2023. That was a very educational and enlightening
experience to be with so many others following the same journey. At our Department Convention I presented our
Membership Theme and working membership on the state level has been both challenging and so rewarding. The
National and Eastern Division membership zoom meetings bring a wealth of knowledge and understanding to this
position and the opportunity to learn from the other state leaders. Our National leaders are most gracious in answering
my questions. Being invited to attend the monthly Membership and Leadership meetings held by the American Legion
has increased my knowledge of just how the Auxiliary and the Legion have similar issues but sometimes a different
method of achieving resolution of those issues. I hope that my input at these meetings has helped to provide insight for
these attendees on the Auxiliary. This encouraged me to have my first Membership Leaders meeting with our Auxiliary
membership chairmen and it was successful with another planned for the near future. Since August 2023 I have
engaged with over 100 members via email, phone, text or in person on a wide assortment of membership questions,
problems, and concerns. I have found my time as your Department Sr. Vice President to be a very educational and
rewarding experience. Lastly working on Team CT to have Jim LaCoursiere become our next National AL Commander
has been a privilege.
Over the course of my 14 years as a member here is my background information. On the Unit level, I have held all
positions except that of Historian and Sgt-at-Arms and have been the Chairman or a committee member for all
Programs. On the District level, I have served four terms as Dept. Vice President/District President for the 4 th District and
in 2016 was the District President of the year. I have served as District Sr. VP; Jr. VP; Secretary; Asst. Sgt-at-Arms and
temporary Chaplain; worked membership and fundraising. On the Department level, I have served on Americanism,
Children and Youth, Constitution and By-laws; Finance; Past President Parley Education Grant; Cavalcade of Memories
Chairman and created our two history rooms at the department office; Policy Chairman; Public Relations Chairman for 8
years; Created and maintained our website as Webmaster. Attending Stand Down, Christmas Shops and working to help
those in my Community have been memorable moments. I was the Goal 4 Chairman for our 5-year Strategic Planning
Team.
Thank you for your time and attention.

Dear Officers, Chairmen and Members,
I am writing to put forth my intention to run for the position of Senior Vice President of the American Legion Auxiliary for the year 2024-2025. I have been privileged to work with many of you over the years and would consider it an honor to you and our members.
I joined the American Legion Auxiliary in 2012 under my grandfather, William Buckingham, a United States Navy man who served in World War II. I belong to Darrow Rebuzzini Unit #48 in Guilford in which I am currently serving as Unit President. There I have also served as Senior Vice President and Chaplain and was awarded unit member of the year in 2015-2016.
At the District Level, I have served as Chaplain, Senior Vice President and as 2nd District President (for five years). I have assisted with several fundraisers and created several giving opportunities to Aid Veterans as well as the Children's Hospital.
At the Department Level, I currently serve as Representative from the 2nd District, Public Relations Chairman and VA Deputy for West Haven Hospital and the Child Welfare Foundation chair under Children and Youth. I have also served as the Junior Activities Chairman (3 years), Americanism Chairman (2 years), Community Service Chairman as well as been on the Policy Committee and the Finance Committee and served as Representative from the Second District on the DEC for five years. I am also the dedicated bingo caller at the West Haven Veterans Hospital on Thursdays for the past 5 years. I have participated in the Christmas Shops at both Rocky Hill and West Haven, Program Information Conference, Department Mid Winters and Conventions, National Mission Training, National Conventions and have visited many other Districts.
I have always believe that it is important to help out where you can in the community and the world that we live in. While my triplets where young, I started volunteering at the local food bank and have been a volunteer there for over 13 years. I have served as Guilford Women President for 2 years, PTO President for 3 years and have created many fundraisers and Galas for the CT Foodshare as well as local schools and sporting clubs when money was tight. In 2020, I won the SHE-RO award, a multi town award celebrating the accomplishments of women who have made a difference in the lives of people throughout the community. I also received a commendation from the governor as well as state Representative for the volunteer work that I do for the food bank and the community. I was also selected to serve on the CT Foodshare advisory committee in 2022 and currently serve in that capacity.
It would be an honor to serve the American Legion Auxiliary as Department of Connecticut Vice President for the year 2024-2025. I ask for your valuable support for my candidacy. I believe your endorsement will help reinforce the unity and progress we aspire to achieve within our department and help to reach our goals.
Sincerely,,
Kristin M. Jones

Members of The American Legion Auxiliary Department of Connecticut,
This letter is written to announce my candidacy for the leadership role of National Executive
Committee Person (formerly Committeeman).
“ The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between, the leader is a servant.” - Max DePree
Max DePree is best known for his work as CEO of Herman Miller, Inc. During his tenure,
Herman Miller became one of the most profitable Fortune 500 companies. Mr. DePree is
credited with turning a small family-owned business, into what was at the time, the second
largest furniture maker in the world. He did this with the compassion and understanding that a
leader is not just a servant of his customers, but a servant of his co-workers as well.
While I have never been a CEO, I do have the knowledge to define the reality of what has led to
the decline in ALA membership and member participation over the past five or more years.
I also have the desire and compassion to help make our organization better. We do this by
trying to include all members instead of excluding. To thank all members who retain
membership from year to year, as well as members who volunteer their time and talents to
serve on an ALA committee. (Yes, we all have a given talent.) Finally, I have the understanding
that leaders of our organization are not only servants of God, but servants to the entire
membership of the ALA, and without our affiliation to a veteran, along with our mission to serve
veterans and their families (which includes all of us) we could not be members, and without
members there would be no American Legion Auxiliary Organization.
With these principles in mind, along with the ALA’s principles of: Justice, Freedom, and
Democracy I seek to be National Executive Committee Person from the Department of
Connecticut.
For God and Country,
Marie Delaney

Madam President and members of the American Legion Auxiliary Department of CT,
I am writing to you today to state my intention to run for the office of National Executive
Committeeman for the 2024-2026 term.
Through the eligibility of my husband Harry (Butch) Hansen, a 35-year veteran of the US Air Force, I had
the esteemed pleasure of joining the ALA in 1999. Butch and I have been married for over 40 years, we
have 2 children both of whom were military children of a deployed airman and are both Auxiliary
members themselves.
I immediately became active in my unit and after attending my first activity in November 1999, the
Auxiliary Christmas Gift Shop, I became committed to the mission and never looked back. I learned
firsthand what a difference we make in the lives of our veterans every day. Attending my first
Department Convention the following year, I purchased a Unit Handbook and read it cover to cover to
learn all I could about this wonderful organization. Throughout my membership, I have served all offices
in my unit except for Chaplain and am serving my unit as Secretary/Treasurer for my 14 th year. I also
served as chairman of all committees and have been the Bingo Chairman for the last 20 years. At the
District level, I held all offices again apart from Chaplain and served two years as 2 nd District President. I
also served as chairman or was a member on all committees.
In 2003, I began my journey at the Department level, becoming Community Service Chairman for
Department President Karen Sheffield. Since that time, I have held the following positions:
Chairman:
Americanism, Auxiliary Emergency Fund, Education, Past President’s Parley, National Security,
Leadership, Membership, Juniors, Policy Personnel, Finance, Constitution and By Laws.
Committee member:
VA&R, Children and Youth, Girls’ State (counselor and/or commission member 2003-present)
Officer:
Sgt.-at-Arms – 2006, 2007, 2011; Sr. Vice President – 2013; President – 2013; NEC -2014;
Secretary/Treasurer – 2014-2020
Throughout this time, I had extensive interactions with the National Organization. I have attended
numerous of the following to remain abreast of current happenings and important changes: Dept.
Leadership National Conferences, Washington Awareness Conferences, Mission Training, and National
Conventions.
At the National level I served in the following roles:
Chairman: Eastern Division VA&R, National Junior Activities, Community Service.
Committee Member: Strategic Planning, Junior Activities, Membership
Served as the Election Judge at 3 National Conventions.
I understand that the responsibility of the National Executive Committeeman is to be a part of the
governance for the organization, fulfilling fiduciary responsibilities by attending board meetings,
reviewing financial reports, approving the yearly budget that is based on forecasted income and
projected expenses, adopting policies, supporting decisions about investments, participating in
discussions, working with management to make sure that there are proper checks and balances in place
to help minimize the opportunities of risk ,providing oversight and making other decisions that serve the
best interest of the American Legion Auxiliary.
I am confident in my ability to serve in the role of National Executive Committeeman because of my
experiences with the American Legion Auxiliary. I know that I will be a responsible liaison between the
National organization and our Department. I will ensure that the Department members are kept abreast
of all pertinent information while safeguarding the best interest at both National and Department levels.
Sincerely,

This is my letter of intent to be a candidate for the office of National Executive
Committeeperson.
Communication and Information sharing was important to me when serving as
secretary/treasurer of the Department and would like to continue to make sure what can be
shared with all members is sent out.
Over my 56 years of membership, I have learned many things from serving on committees,
attending Regionals, Mission Trainings, Washington Conferences, Presidents’ and Secretaries’
conferences and meeting with members from all over, exchanging ideas and learning how
different Departments go about accomplishing their work. We all continue to learn more about
programs, how things are accomplished and better ways of obtaining our goals by sharing
information.
Changes to many documents and programs, etc. of the American Legion Auxiliary come up from
time to time and I will always put the best interest of our organization first.
My service to the American Legion Auxiliary is attached to the letter.
Thank you for supporting my candidacy.

Madame Dept. Secretary,
This is my letter of Intent to Run for the Office of Department of Connecticut Alternate NEC.
It is important to me that ALL OBLIGATIONS of an NEC be followed.
The Alternate NEC needs to have the time to be kept informed of what is happening at the National level as
well as making sure our DEC is following our Constitution, By-Laws and other Governing Documents. She or
he is to inform the DEC (our Governing members) when we are are not following them and why.
I have had the time to review what the duties and responsibilities are and have gone over all our Governing
Documents while recuperating and have the time and knowledge to do this position.
After careful reading of our documents I have become aware that our Department President who has been
the Alternate NEC, in the past cannot hold this position as well as any other Department Officer as our
Documents clearly state. "A member cannot hold more than ONE officer position at a time".
I have never held this position and now feel it is the right time for me to. Knowing that if for any reason the
NEC cannot fulfill her term, I would be there to step into her/his position.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandra Cruz

Madam President Jen,
Please accept this short letter advising that I plan to seek the nomination for the position of Chaplain for the Department of CT at our convention in July for the 2024-2025 year.
I enjoy the responsibilities the position of the office of “Chaplain” entail. Particularly, the writing of my own invocations and benedictions, the writing of “blessings” , etc. for our news bulletins are duties that I love and proudly perform.
It goes without saying, that it is a pleasure to send cards of: condolence, get well, and happy events to Auxiliary members statewide.
Thank you and blessings,
