March brings the first day of Spring and Scholarship deadlines (March 1). There was a great National webinar on Scholarships on January 10. The webinar was recorded and is now available at the ALA Academy. Start planning for next year!
Please find the application, under Forms, Scholarship Forms, for a $500.00 Department Education Grant, offered by the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Connecticut. The completed application with the cover sheet and all required documents MUST be returned to me no later than March 30, 2024.

I hope everyone’s new year is off to a great start. If you haven’t already, now is the time to get
scholarship and grant information out to schools. Reach out to the superintendent, principals and/or
counselors of the high schools. This information can easily be posted on the school’s website.
Scholarship deadlines are March 1, 2024. For more info go to on the left side menu you will
find Education Key Resources. You can click on the following for details on each scholarship.
Children of Warriors National Presidents' Scholarship Application
Spirit of Youth Scholarship for Junior Members Application
Non-Traditional Student Scholarship Application
Junior Member Loyalty Scholarship Application
Also, The Scholarships for Military Children Program, through Fisher House, was created to
recognize military families; contributions to the fighting force's readiness and to
celebrate the commissary's role in the military family community. For more info.
I attended the Eastern Division Education quarterly committee meeting. The attendees expressed
concern about getting this scholarship info out there. Last year, only 7 people applied for Non-
Traditional Student Scholarship Application. So, let’s get the word out. There was an ALA National
Scholarship Webinar on January 11. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend. It was recorded and
soon the video will be posted. I will share that as soon as it is available.

As 2023 comes to a close, your Unit may want to reach out to schools with information
on the ALA Department of Connecticut Education Grants. The application was in the
PIC papers, but here it is as an attachment for those that that did not receive the PIC
packet. I must receive the application and required documents no later than March 30,
2024.
Also, there are several scholarships available through National. The applications must
be completed on-line and can all be found on the National site (https://member.legion-
aux.org/member/committees/education ). I created flyers you can distribute to the
schools that provide info (eligibility and rules) on the different scholarships available.
There are links in them to the applications, so they can be printed and given to schools,
but they should also be sent electronically so the applicants can access the links.
Also, National is holding a Scholarship webinar on January 11. I cannot attend as I will
be having surgery. Any volunteers? It would be great if the Department can have a
representative that can report back to the Units so all Units can have success guiding
students through the application process.

Thank you for the wonderful reception of my first presentation at PIC. Many reached
out to me that day, or later by email, regarding my letters to district superintendents and
their faculty and staff. They are included in the PIC papers. Remember, I am willing to
personalize them for you if you don't have the capability. Just let me know. I also want
to hear from you if you got a positive reaction from anyone in your district or school you
sent letters to.
Many schools are currently having Open Houses and/or Parent-Teacher Conferences.
This is a good time to reach out to the schools about putting boxes for collections of 10
for 10 for Education supplies. You could also make a sign encouraging parents to
register an account with Box Tops for
Education (https://www.boxtops4education.com/s/. This is a great way for their schools
to earn cash.
Anything you do, let the world know on social media. And, share we me so I can pass
on your great ideas to the other Units.

I am Elaine Kotler of Hayes-Velhage Unit 96 of West Hartford. I have been appointed as the Education Chair. I am a teacher of 20+ years in secondary schools, both middle school and high school and adjunct faculty at Manchester Community College (now CT Community College). - To promote quality education for children, especially for military children, and adults
- To encourage schools to invite veterans to speak in their classrooms
- To provide scholarships for students who desire a college education
- To Support legislation that establishes new scholarship opportunities
- To support the Education program and scholarship opportunities of The American Legion
There is always the ongoing Give 10 to Education. Looking to the horizon, American Education Week is November 13-17, 2023.
