What We Do:
Our members do incredible work. On average, each year, they…
American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) members and volunteers step up to advance our mission of service to veterans, military and their families! Over the years, The American Legion Family has influenced considerable social change in America, won hundreds of benefits for veterans, helped military families through transition and produced many important programs for our country’s youth. Today, ALA members across the country are helping military families cope with the effects of multiple deployments. The toll on our all-volunteer force and their families has been enormous. The Auxiliary’s efforts are focused in three primary areas: Why Should You Belong to The American Legion Family? You — we — can make a difference. Why We Matter
Founded in 1919, the American Legion Auxiliary helps to advance the mission of The American Legion. With nearly three-quarters of a million members, it is the world’s largest patriotic service organization and one of the nation’s most prominent supporters of veterans, military, and their families. As of August 2019, the American Legion Auxiliary, will accept all spouses of Veterans and active military into the organization. This means that male spouses of our women veterans are now eligible to join us. We look forward to this positive change and welcome them into our organization. ALA members volunteer millions of hours annually, with a value averaging $2 billion each year. From helping to draft the GI Bill in 1944 to advocating for veterans on Capitol Hill, The American Legion Family has been instrumental in advancing legislation that improves the quality of life for our nation’s veterans.
